Good question.
No, he doesn't need that headgear for protective purposes. It's just part of the costume on "Think Fast!"
I won't get into the details of the show...check out the Wikipedia entry on it if you want to know the rules. All you really need to know is that I got some super-cool late-80's gifts, including a remote control car and foosball table.
Seriously, there was no real head trauma danger, so I'm thinking that the helmet and goggles were a bit of overkill. Plus, would it have killed them to have had a mirror backstage so that I could see that the chin guard was crooked?

I don't know what is worse - the Think Fast photo - OR - the cheesy Glam Shot as your Avatar. All I know is that I have both for my WALL. Ahahahahahahahah!!!!!!!!!
...and the 15-speed bike.
What an interesting experience- especially the 2+ hours waiting in the adjacent auditorium as they taped a 1/2 hour show. God!
I really like the pensive "crooked mouth" look as you silently read (host) Michael's cue card. (Is it me or does the host look like Steve Erckle's older brother?)
Of course, this was the show that bestowed upon the world one of it's greatest quotes: "It's good - IS BUT IT ART?"
; )
